The widow of the writer and naturalist Gerald Durrell has appealed directly to Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a last ditch effort to avert the destruction of the "jewel in the crown" of Greek biodiversity sites.
Erimitis is a wild natural area of high ecological value. It is located at the northeast coast of Corfu and includes the nearest point, within a distance of about 2 km, to the Albanian coast. The extent of the area is about 150 ha and the highest point is at 126 m. The climate is mediterranean with mild, rainy winters and warm, dry summers with fresh winds.
Erimitis, a wild natural area at the northeast coast of Corfu island, is the nearest spot to the mainland. Therefore, it has often been described as a passage for many species to the island.
